At Groupon, we help communities thrive through a portfolio of initiatives that include employee volunteerism, local community development, strategic investment in nonprofit partnerships, cause marketing, and responsible business practices.
Our goal is to empower our employees and customers to take part in making the communities in which we operate better places to work and live. Groupon is the place you start when you want to buy just about anything, anytime, anywhere. But even more — we also want it to be the company you think of when it comes to helping build communities where individuals and families can thrive and prosper.
Local Community Development
Thriving communities are good for everyone. Quality schools, better jobs, safe and clean neighborhoods that are inclusively diverse – all of these things make a community a desirable place to live, work and operate a business. And it’s those businesses, the retailers on every block in every neighborhood, that lend a distinct personality and economic viability to the communities around them.
We partner with a handful of community organizations that have their ears on the ground of neighborhood development and small business acceleration like Accion, National Main Street Center and Kiva, respectively. We tend to focus our investments at the neighborhood-level, often piloting in our hometown of Chicago, seeing what works, and then scaling to other communities around the world.
In 2019, we supported 3,975 small businesses and entrepreneurs through our Social Responsibility programming. Better yet, 82% of those businesses were minority- or women-owned.
Quite simply, food insecurity exists in every community in the United States. Feeding America anticipates more than 50 million people may experience food insecurity in 2020, including a potential 17 million children. This means 1 in 4 children in the U.S. may not know where they will get their next meal and, as such, will have difficulty reaching their full potential.
We helped more than nearly 800,000 people get access to nutritious food through our food insecurity programs in 2019.
Volunteering at Groupon
Groupon Volunteers engages employees with the causes they care about. It’s a global network of do-gooders on a mission to help others. We provide opportunities for our employees to volunteer throughout the year by connecting them to nonprofit partners and NGOs around the world. From mentoring girls into becoming future computer science leaders to repacking canned goods at local food banks to crafting cat toys for shelter pets, our volunteers are ready to do it all.

Volunteer-a-thon is our spin on the traditional month of service. Every June, teams of employees compete in a battle for volunteer supremacy with nonprofits around the world benefitting from thousands of hours of service.
